Container Sharing in Seaport Hinterland Transportation

چکیده
In this contribution we optimize the transportation of containers in the hinterland of a local area with one terminal and one depot for empty containers and trucks. There are several customers who want to receive goods by inbound containers and several customers who want to ship goods by outbound containers. Additionally, there are empty inbound containers and empty outbound containers. We present two different models corresponding to different scenarios for the transportation processes performed by a homogeneous and limited set of available trucks. In the first scenario (distinct container problem) empty containers are exclusively used by their owners and therefore must be sent to their predefined destinations. In the second scenario (shared container problem) empty containers can be interchanged among several owners and therefore can be arbitrarily used. By comparing the model for the distinct container problem with the model representing the shared container problem the benefit of container sharing can be analyzed.

Optimal shipping routes and vessel size for intermodal barge transport with empty container repositioning
Despite the growing role of barge transportation in the hinterland access of major seaports in Northwestern Europe, service network design for intermodal barge transportation has received little research attention. In this paper, a decision support model for service network design in intermodal barge transportation is presented. The model determines optimal shipping routes for roundtrip service...

متن کاملSimulation of Transportation Activities in Automated Seaport Container Terminals
A container terminal represents a complex system with highly dynamic interactions between the various handling, transportation and storage units and incomplete knowledge about future events. Hence, decentralized planning is the only realistic mode to govern logistics control of automated container terminals. We classify the specific logistics planning and control issues arising in seaport conta...
متن کاملVehicle Dispatching at Seaport Container Terminals using Evolutionary Algorithms
In the last four decades the container, as an essential part of a unit-load-concept, has scored a great success in international sea freight transportation. With increasing containerization the number of seaport container terminals and competition has increased considerably. One of the success factors of a terminal is related to the time in port for container vessels and the transshipment rates...
متن کاملThe Interport: A Logistics Model and an Application to the Distribution of Maritime Containers
In a container transportation and logistics network, an interport is a common user facility located in the hinterland of one or several seaports where services are available to carriers and shippers such as transshipping, customs clearance and inspection, temporary storage, tagging, and sorting. Interports pose opportunities and challenges for operators involved in freight transport and trade. ...
